Wireless Networking in the Developing World
Ebook - Computers & Internet

By Rob Flickenger, Corinna "Elektra" Aichele, Carlo Fonda, Jim Forster, Ian Howard, Tomas Krag, Marco Zennaro, First Edition, January 2006

The massive popularity of wireless networking has caused equipment costs to continually plummet, while equipment capabilities continue to increase. By applying this technology in areas that are badly in need of critical communications infrastructure, more people can be brought online than ever before, in less time, for very little cost. We hope to not only convince you that this is possible, but also show how we have made such networks work, and to give you the information and tools you need to start a network project in your local community.

This book was created by a team of individuals who each, in their own field, are actively participating in the ever-expanding Internet by pushing its reach farther than ever before. This book documents our efforts to build wireless networks in the developing world.

Dreamweaver CS3 The Missing Manual 2007

Despite the many improvements in software over the years, one feature has grown consistently worse: documentation. Until version 4, Dreamweaver came with a printed manual. But since MX 2004, all you get is a Getting Started booklet. To get any real information, you need to delve into the program’s online help screens. But even if you have no problem reading a help screen in one window as you work in another, something’s still missing. At times, the terse electronic help screens assume you already understand the discussion at hand, and hurriedly skip over important topics that require an in-depth presentation. In addition, you don’t always get an objective evaluation of the program’s features. Engineers often add technically sophisticated features to a program because they can, not because you need them. You shouldn’t have to waste your time learning features that don’t help you get your work done.

Dreamweaver CS3: The Missing Manual is designed to accommodate readers at every technical level. The primary discussions are written for advanced-beginner or intermediate computer users. But if you’re new to building Web pages, special sidebar articles called “Up To Speed” provide the introductory information you need to understand the topic at hand. If you’re a Web veteran, on the other hand, keep your eye out for similar shaded boxes called “Power Users’ Clinic.” They offer more technical tips, tricks, and shortcuts for the experienced computer fan.

Photoshop® CS3 Workflow - The Digital Photographer’s Guide

“Following a workflow frees you to think about the effect on the image rather than the process.”

Photoshop CS3 Workflow really covers the full spectrum of adjustments you’ll want to apply to photographic images in Photoshop. As a result, it is appropriate for photographers of all skill levels who would like some guidance in creating the best workflow for image optimization. Beginning users will build a strong foundation and then be able to move on to more advanced topics, while expert users will gain a greater understanding of the issues affecting workflow as well as some new techniques they can use on their images.

This book was written based on Adobe Photoshop CS3, but it’s also applicable in large part for users of prior versions of Photoshop (though some new features will obviously not be available). For users of Photoshop Elements, I recommend the book I coauthored with Peter K. Burian, Photoshop Elements 5 Workflow (Sybex, 2007), as a great resource for your workflow.

How to Cheat at Securing Linux
Linux servers now account for 33% of all networks servers running worldwide (Source: IDC). The top 3 market share holders in the network server space (IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Dell) all use Linux as their standard operating system for the majority of their servers designed for medium to large size businesses. As with any technologies, increased usage results in increased attention from malicious hackers. For years a myth existed that Windows was inherently less secure than Linux, because there were significantly more attacks against Windows machines than Linux. But this was a fallacy.

There were more attacks against Windows machines because there were simply so many more Windows machines to attack. Now, the numbers tell the exact OPPOSITE story. Linux servers account for 1/3 of all servers worldwide, but in 2005 there were 3 times as many high-severity security vulnerabilities discovered on Linux servers.

The Art of Flash Animation: Creative Cartooning

There are a number of manuals available on Flash, but too many of them get bogged down in details about ActionScript or interactivity. Frustrated with wading through such information in other Flash manuals, author/illustrator Mark Stephen Smith set out to make the book he wished he had when he started learning Flash. This book is both a practical primer in the fundamentals of classical, hand-drawn 2D screen animation and a basic introduction to Flash’s expert handling of recyclable symbols that make independent, web, and television animation both more affordable and more efficient. It is conveniently divided into two parts. Part I is for those who are new to the terms and techniques of hand-drawn animation, character design, and storyboards. Part II covers scanning and digitising artwork into Flash, as well as setting up scenes and symbols.

Hacking for Dummies

This book outlines computer hacker tricks and techniques — in plain English — to assess the security of your own information systems, find security vulnerabilities, and fix the vulnerabilities before malicious and criminal hackers have an opportunity to take advantage of them. This hacking is the professional, aboveboard, and legal type of security testing — which I call ethical hacking throughout the book. Computer and network security is a complex subject and an evermoving target. You must stay on top of it to ensure your information is protected from the bad guys. You can implement all the security technologies and other best practices possible, and your information systems may be secure — as far as you know. However, until you understand how hackers think and apply that knowledge to assess your systems from a hacker’s-eye view, you can’t get a true sense of how secure your information really is. Ethical hacking — sometimes referred to as penetration testing or white-hat hacking — is a necessary requirement to ensure that information systems are truly secure on an ongoing basis. This book provides you with the knowledge required to successfully implement an ethical hacking program, along with countermeasures that you can implement to keep malicious hackers out of your business.

Google Hacks

Why Google Hacks?

“Hacks” are generally considered to be “quick-n-dirty” solutions to programming problems or interesting techniques for getting a task done. But what does this kind of hacking have to do with Google?

Considering the size of the Google index, there are many times when you might want to do a particular kind of search and you get too many results for the search to be useful. Or you may want to do a search that the current Google interface does not support.

The idea of Google Hacks is not to give you some exhaustive manual of how every command in the Google syntax works, but rather to show you some tricks for making the best use of a search and show applications of the Google API that perform searches that you can’t perform using the regular Google interface. In other words, hacks.

Dozens of programs and interfaces have sprung up from the Google API. Both games and serious applications using Google’s database of web pages are available from everybody from the serious programmer to the devoted fan (like me).
