How to Cheat at Securing Linux
Linux servers now account for 33% of all networks servers running worldwide (Source: IDC). The top 3 market share holders in the network server space (IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Dell) all use Linux as their standard operating system for the majority of their servers designed for medium to large size businesses. As with any technologies, increased usage results in increased attention from malicious hackers. For years a myth existed that Windows was inherently less secure than Linux, because there were significantly more attacks against Windows machines than Linux. But this was a fallacy.

There were more attacks against Windows machines because there were simply so many more Windows machines to attack. Now, the numbers tell the exact OPPOSITE story. Linux servers account for 1/3 of all servers worldwide, but in 2005 there were 3 times as many high-severity security vulnerabilities discovered on Linux servers.

The Art of Flash Animation: Creative Cartooning

There are a number of manuals available on Flash, but too many of them get bogged down in details about ActionScript or interactivity. Frustrated with wading through such information in other Flash manuals, author/illustrator Mark Stephen Smith set out to make the book he wished he had when he started learning Flash. This book is both a practical primer in the fundamentals of classical, hand-drawn 2D screen animation and a basic introduction to Flash’s expert handling of recyclable symbols that make independent, web, and television animation both more affordable and more efficient. It is conveniently divided into two parts. Part I is for those who are new to the terms and techniques of hand-drawn animation, character design, and storyboards. Part II covers scanning and digitising artwork into Flash, as well as setting up scenes and symbols.

Hacking for Dummies

This book outlines computer hacker tricks and techniques — in plain English — to assess the security of your own information systems, find security vulnerabilities, and fix the vulnerabilities before malicious and criminal hackers have an opportunity to take advantage of them. This hacking is the professional, aboveboard, and legal type of security testing — which I call ethical hacking throughout the book. Computer and network security is a complex subject and an evermoving target. You must stay on top of it to ensure your information is protected from the bad guys. You can implement all the security technologies and other best practices possible, and your information systems may be secure — as far as you know. However, until you understand how hackers think and apply that knowledge to assess your systems from a hacker’s-eye view, you can’t get a true sense of how secure your information really is. Ethical hacking — sometimes referred to as penetration testing or white-hat hacking — is a necessary requirement to ensure that information systems are truly secure on an ongoing basis. This book provides you with the knowledge required to successfully implement an ethical hacking program, along with countermeasures that you can implement to keep malicious hackers out of your business.

Google Hacks

Why Google Hacks?

“Hacks” are generally considered to be “quick-n-dirty” solutions to programming problems or interesting techniques for getting a task done. But what does this kind of hacking have to do with Google?

Considering the size of the Google index, there are many times when you might want to do a particular kind of search and you get too many results for the search to be useful. Or you may want to do a search that the current Google interface does not support.

The idea of Google Hacks is not to give you some exhaustive manual of how every command in the Google syntax works, but rather to show you some tricks for making the best use of a search and show applications of the Google API that perform searches that you can’t perform using the regular Google interface. In other words, hacks.

Dozens of programs and interfaces have sprung up from the Google API. Both games and serious applications using Google’s database of web pages are available from everybody from the serious programmer to the devoted fan (like me).

No registration, no credit cards and no catches, no limits

VoIP service Talkster has two major announcements from CTIA this week. It’s launching World Dialing, a new service that lets users call long distance and internationally for free, and it’s also launching a Facebook application.

World Dialing lets you make free calls from cell phones, landlines, computers, instant messaging clients, or VoIP phones. These calls are ad-supported, and the ads will be somewhat targeted. You can access Talkster’s World Dialing service from your computer or your mobile, which can be used with your mobile browser or through SMS text messaging.

As with most similar services, a free, local number is assigned once you register for the service. World Dialing can be used for conference calls as well, which supports up to 5 people. The Facebook application, found here, incorporates these same calling features from World Dialing for free calls and group conferencing for those friends in your Facebook networks. In other news, Skype is working on a branded mobile phone for free calls, and offering free calls on MySpace IM as well.

Microsoft Windows Command-Line Administrator's Pocket Consultant

This guide offers step-by-step instructions for a many time-saving techniques using the Windows command line, covering such topics as running commands, using event-logging tools, maintaining network printers, and configuring TCP/IP networking services.

Introduction

Microsoft Windows Command Line Administrator’s Pocket Consultant is designed to be a concise and compulsively usable resource for Windows administrators. This is the readable resource guide that you’ll want on your desk or in your pocket at all times. The book discusses everything you need to perform the core administrative tasks using the Windows command line. Because the focus is directed to providing you with the maximum value in a pocket-sized guide, you don’t have to wade through hundreds of pages of extraneous information to find what you’re looking for. Instead, you’ll find exactly what you need to get the job done.

In short, the book is designed to be the one resource you consult whenever you have questions regarding Windows command-line administration. To this end, the book concentrates on daily administration procedures, frequently used tasks, documented examples, and options that are representative but not necessarily inclusive. One of the goals is to keep the content so concise that the book remains compact and easy to navigate while ensuring that the book is packed with as much information as possible—making it a valuable resource. Thus, instead of a hefty 1,000-page tome or a lightweight 100-page quick reference, you get a valuable resource guide that can help you quickly and easily perform common tasks, solve problems, and implement such advanced administration areas as automated monitoring, memory leak analysis, disk partitioning, Active Directory management, and network troubleshooting.

Who Is This Book For?

Microsoft Windows Command Line Administrator’s Pocket Consultant covers Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Professional. The book is designed for

  • Current Windows Server 2003 administrators

  • Support staff who maintain Windows XP Professional systems

  • Accomplished users who have some administrator responsibilities

  • Administrators upgrading to Windows Server from previous versions

  • Administrators transferring from other platforms

To pack in as much information as possible, I had to assume that you have basic networking skills and a basic understanding of Windows and that Windows is already installed on your systems. With this in mind, I don’t devote entire chapters to understanding Windows architecture, installing Windows, or Windows startup and shutdown. I do, however, cover scheduling tasks, monitoring Windows systems, managing accounts, administering network services, and much more.

I also assume that you are fairly familiar with Windows commands and proce dures as well as the Windows user interface. If you need help learning Windows basics, you should read the Windows documentation.

How Is This Book Organized?

Microsoft Windows Command Line Administrator’s Pocket Consultant is designed to be used in the daily administration of Windows systems, and as such, the book is organized by job-related tasks rather than by Windows features. If you are reading this book, you should be aware of the relationship between Pocket Consultants and Administrator’s Companions. Both types of books are designed to be a part of an administrator’s library. While Pocket Con sultants are the down-and-dirty, in-the trenches books, Administrator’s Companions are the comprehensive tutorials and references that cover every aspect of deploying a product or technology in the enterprise.

Speed and ease of reference are an essential part of this hands-on guide. The book has an expanded table of contents and an extensive index for finding answers to problems quickly. Many other quick reference features have been added as well. These features include quick step-by-step instructions, lists, tables with fast facts, and extensive cross-references. The book is organized into both parts and chapters. Each part contains an opening paragraph or two about the chapters contained in that part.

Part I, “Windows Command Line Fundamentals,” reviews the fundamental tasks you need for command-line administration. Chapter 1 provides an overview of command-line administration tools, techniques, and concepts. Chapter 2 is designed to help you get the most out of the command shell. It details techniques for starting up the command shell using parameters, how to control command path settings, what redirection techniques are available, and how to use multiple commands in sequences. Chapter 3 discusses the essentials for creating command-line scripts. You’ll learn how to set variables, work with conditional controls, and create procedures. Chapter 4 explains how to automate common administrative tasks using the command line.

Microsoft Windows provides many command-line tools to help in the management of daily operations. Part II, “Windows Systems Administration,” discusses the core tools and techniques you’ll use to manage Windows systems. Chapter 5 discusses many of the key administration tools, including those that help you gather system information, work with the Windows registry, configure Windows services, and shut down systems remotely. Chapter 6 examines tools that help you track information that is written to the Windows event logs, including warnings and errors. You’ll also learn how to write events to the system and application logs. In Chapter 7, you’ll learn about tools and techniques for monitoring applications, examining processes, and maintaining performance.

The book continues with Part III, “Windows File System and Disk Administration.” Users depend on hard disk drives to store their word-processing documents, spreadsheets, and other types of data. If you’ve worked with Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 for any length of time, you’ve probably used the Disk Management tool. The command-line counterpart of Disk Management is the disk partition utility (Disk Part). You can use Disk Part to handle most disk management tasks as well as to perform some additional tasks that cannot be performed in the GUI. Chapter 8 provides an introduction to DiskPart and also discusses FSUtil, CHKDSK, and CHKNTFS. Chapter 9 discusses partitioning basic disks. Chapter 10 examines dynamic disks and how they are used. The chapter also examines implementing, managing, and troubleshooting RAID.

In Part IV, “Windows Active Directory and Network Administration,” concentrates on the core commands you’ll use for configuring, managing, and troubleshooting Active Directory, print services, and TCP/IP networking. Chapter 11 discusses many of the key directory services administration tools, including tools that help you gather directory information. Chapter 12 examines tools that help you create and manage computer accounts in Active Directory. You’ll also learn how to con figure domain controllers as global catalogs and operations masters. Chapter 13 completes the directory services discussion with a look at creating and managing accounts for users and groups in Active Directory. Chapter 14 examines network printing and print services. Chapter 15 discusses configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting TCP/IP networking from the command line.

Hacks to Beat Rapidshare Download Limits and Waiting Time

Here are some hints to help you more efficently use rapidshare. Skipping waiting time and bypassing download limits are rapidshare hacks that everybody should know.

Rapidshare has been an excellent tool for sharing large files. Recently users have discovered ways of bypassing the download limits and skipping the waiting time. Here are a description of these methods.

Update: Two new methods of bypassing download limits have been posted. These are more advanced and may require additional software or hardware, but you should check them out when you are done with these easier methods:

Rapidshare traces the users IP address to limit each user to a certain amount of downloading per day. To get around this, you need to show the rapidshare server a different IP address.

Here are some methods for doing this:

1. Short-Out the JavaScript:

1. Goto the page you want to download
2. Select FREE button
3. In the address bar put the following: javascript:alert(c=0)
4. Click OK
5. Click OK to the pop-up box
6. Enter the captcha
7. Download Your File

2. Request a new IP address from your ISP server.

Here's how to do it in windows:

1. Click Start

2. Click run
3. In the run box type cmd.exe and click OK
4. When the command prompt opens type the following. ENTER after each new line.

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
exit

5. Erase your cookies in whatever browser you are using.
6. Try the rapidshare download again.

Frequently you will be assigned a new IP address when this happens. Sometime you will, sometimes you will not. If you are on a fixed IP address, this method will not work. To be honest, I do not know how to do this in linux/unix/etc. If this works for you, you may want to save the above commands into a batch file, and just run it when you need it.

3. Use a proxy with SwitchProxy and Firefox:

1. Download and install Firefox if you have not already
2. Download and install SwitchProxy
3. Google for free proxies
4. When you hit your download limit, clean your cookies and change your proxy
4. Use an anonymous service:
Running your system through the tor network should in theory work; however, it is difficult to use and setup. Plus, you allow others to run their evil deeds through your system as well by using this system. Anonymizer 2005 is inexpensive, easy to use, but not free. Other pay services would likely work as well.
5. You can use a bookmarklet to stop your wait times:
    1. Open IE
    2. Right Click On This Link
    3. Select Add to Favorites
    4. Select Yes to the warning that the bookmark may be unsafe.
    5. Name it "RapidShare No Wait"
    6. Click on the Links folder (if you want to display it in your IE toolbar)
    7. Click OK
    8. You may need to close and reopen IE to see it
    9. Goto rapidshare and click the bookmarklet when you are forced to wait

1. What is USL?

Nowadays, security become more and more important. USB System Lock(USL) is the solution to enhance system security. Beside of basic password authorisation, a physical key can provide extra security. This program is written in Visual Basic and run on Microsoft Windows. It can fully protect the system under normal boot. (Cannot work under safe mode) The program will generate a random string and store it into the USB key drive and windows registry. Once the system is locked, the user have to insert the USB drive that contain the right key to unlock. We bypass the Windows Task Manager too, so it should be 100% safe and secure.

2. Download USL
